Hi, hello, hey!

I’m a music person and a big nerd living in Nashville, spending my days turning feelings into air pressure and electricity and records!

I’ve spent about equal time playing and recording in living rooms, barns, attics, and alleys as I have working in amazing studios in Nashville and around the world.

Whether it’s a pristine pedal steel or that mysterious clanking sample playing through your modular synth rig, I handle all sounds and songs with utmost care and love, because it’s my belief there’s profound beauty and truth to be found in almost everything — from structured song craft and traditional recording practices to the grimiest experimental stream-of-consciousness computer bizarro world <3

In addition to my prod/eng/mix work, I float in and out of bands on a few instruments and have toured and played live with a bunch of the artists I work with!

I got my start as a house engineer at the original Addiction Sound Studios location in Berry Hill. I was fortunate to spend several years there, working under and learning from several brilliant producers and engineers — as well as borrowing gear and studio time to work on my friends’ music — records that I still cherish deeply!

I currently share a private studio with some beloved musical co-conspirators: Ross Collier, Johnny Hopson, and Sofie Pedersen. I'm also the lead engineer at Gnome Studios, where we are working to foster an inspiring, healthy, and highly functional creative environment for all different kinds of musicmaking. While I often bring my work to these familiar rooms, I love to travel for a project, and especially enjoy recording in new or unconventional environments.

Working collaboratively and sharing space with people and their ideas is probably my favorite part of all this. I’m truly grateful to have been called upon by, or shared duties with some amazing music & audio brains, including David Baron, Bella Blasko, Ken Coomer, Aaron Dessner, Bennett Littlejohn, Jamie Mefford, Adrian Olsen, Gabe Simon, Phillip Smith, Eddie Spear, and Sam Westhoff. My dear friends Logan Chung and Ethan Fortenberry have also taught me tremendous things about musicmaking in our co-production journeys together. I owe so much to the skills and ideas I’ve gathered from all the amazing people I get to make music with!

I also build/fix/modify recording and music gear for friends and for fun, and I ride my bike when there’s time :)

I’ll do remote singing saw overdubs for free!

Please give me a shout if you want to talk about anything at all.

With Love,

Berto
